THE DEVIL

-XV-

An invitation to descend into the pit is proffered. The offer may be repulsed, choosing safety, or you may plunge into darkness aware you may not have the strength to free yourself of the horror you will encounter; the picture of yourself you will never be able to accept or refuse. It's an ethical decision you cannot avoid. Wanting to turn and run, never to look at the lickerish, horned goat, especially not to focus on those sulfurous, bloodshot eyes, you swear you will not be pulled in.

Yet, you wonder, what is it that is so terrible? To question is to begin to lose control, you slowly sink into the pit of madness, experiencing exquisite pleasure as you taste freedom from pettiness and the narrow life. Fearfully, you acknowledge the green slimy stub of a candle burning above the goat's head, keeping record of your diminishing existence. Below it is the witches' golden pentacle, inverted and placed between the goat's upcurling horns, a blue bottle fly at center.

Recalling the old witches' saying about power abiding where there is fear, you plunge deeper into the pit and are engulfed by the fiery red circle. Otherwise chaos would become rampant shattering your psyche. As it is, you see your wanton needs leering at you, an inborn weakness unable to fend off the destructive spiral of fear. I will survive it, you say to yourself.

Upright: Approaching temptation, one's weaknesses, pleasures, fears.
Reversed: Giving up dissolute life. Removing the chains that bind. Seeking freedom from self destructive spiral.
